Melanin is produced in the melanocytes, the pigment cells found in the basal layer of the skin. Each melanocyte is surrounded by 36 keratinocytes to form the melanin unit. Once synthesised, melanin is transferred to these keratinocytes which causes the surrounding skin area to darken.
